If you say The Afterglow you say what is actually meant when people speak about a fucking good, hard-edged, real indie rock band.
Founder members are the half english frontman and bassist Dave Timson and pianist/guitarist Mik Lennard, who started the band in Turin, NW Italy, in 1998. After a few line up changes they found the right drummer in Alex Cherry, who joined the pair in 2002.
The band decided to base themselves and work partially in Italy and partially in the UK, on account of their songwriting and sound, which were felt far more akin to an English 4-piece than to a typical Italian band.
Their first official 4-Tracks Ep Modern Life Virus was published in 2004 by the London based record label Silent Revolution Ltd, who discovered the band after accidentally getting a copy of their previous unofficial demo, with the briliant release of debut single Journey. The song was hugely broadcast on many big radios in England and in Italy, while its videoclip was, quite unbelievably for an unknown indie band, broadcast on MTV.
From second Ep Love's The Cure (2005) was taken the hit single Love, that received much critical acclaim on indipendent radios and music magazines in both the UK and Italy, with the single itself being featured even in US and Australia.
That was the first release from the band after they signed with EMI Publishing UK, and it was followed by the first extended tours that brought The Afterglow to London, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Birmingham, Swindon, Peterborough, Milan, Florence, Rome, Naples and many more places in Great Britain and Italy, including, obviously, their beloved hometown Turin.
2006 proved to be a crucial year for the band, extensively on tour in Italy and UK, when their debut album Decalogue Of Modern Life, mixed at Markangelo Studios in London by Steve Orchard (U2, Travis, McCartney, Coldplay) and mastered at Soundmasters by Kevin Metcalfe (Bowie, Queen, Oasis), was released in November. The album has been airplayed, and still is, on many radios in UK, US, Canada, Australia, Italy and in a few other european countries, while the third single Setting Sun has been broadcast on MTV, and on different music networks throughout the world.
The guys kept playing live as a 3-piece until the first half of 2007, collecting among the others their third consecutive appearance at the HUB Festival in Liverpool and an highly acclaimed acoustic set at MTV's digital channel Qoob TV, when they shared the evening with Editors.
They just settled on their current 4-piece lineup in June 2008, welcoming a new talented member, guitarist Alberto Garau.
In november 2008 the band announced they gave birth to their new own record label, named DOUBLEMIND RECORDS, by the merge between their staff and SeeSaw Music management agency, ending a four-year association with Silent Revolution Records. Management said that founder members Dave Timson and Mik Lennard would have a majority say in the running of the new label, which would also sign new acts in the future. The Afterglow's decision to release records worldwide under their own imprint echoes the creation of many other labels founded and run by bands, starting from The Beatles with Apple to, more recently, Oasis with their Big Brother Recordings.
The band's second album, titled "SORRY." has been released on the new label in June 2009.Mik and Dave took the challenge of producing the songs, choosing Dario Ravelli as co-producer.The album as been mastered in Liverpool by William Halfpenny. The first single taken from the Lp, "Merry-Go-Round", is already broadcast on dozens of radios all over the world, while the band played more live dates between UK,Italy,Belgium and Netherlands .
The band started 2010 working on a new album, their third studio Lp.The album, yet untitled, will be recorded and produced between UK and Italy, and will likely be released in early 2011.Meanwhile the band will play a few live events and festivals.
